Writing: A Necessity? What, specifically, is so necessary about writing? What inspired the first cavemen to use an instrument (bone or stick) dipped in the indelible dyes derived from plants to create petroglyphs upon a wall? Why did the ancient Egyptians find it necessary to formulate a process that would create the first papyrus sheets making language a portable commodity? What was it that made Gutenberg want to simplify the printing process so that text could be mass-produced and disseminated to more people? George Farquhar (1678-1703) is attributed with the quote, â€Å"Necessity is the mother of invention.† In light of this statement, I must ask again, what is so necessary about writing that the need to do so has given rise to the invention of paints and inks, the stylus and pencil and quill, the fountain pen and ballpoint, typewriters and fonts, and finally computers and word-processing? I believe there are two very simple and basic reasons behind this so-called â€Å"necessity† of these created inventions – reasons as old as mankind’s innate human nature. First of all, people desire to communicate – this desire transcended mere touch and hand signals or facial expressions and became language. Not to trivialize and condense the ages of development into a paragraph, but as more complex concepts arose it created the need for more complicated symbols and signs to convey meaning accurately. Human memory being what it is, fallible and ultimately terminal, written language became the vehicle to transport the second, and probably more important factor in the continuing invention of written technology – people want to leave something of themselves to posterity. This may be in the form of a story, a poem, a last will and testa... ...r of invention – at least where the desire to communicate is concerned. History has shown mankind’s aspirations to not only leave a message behind, but to invent better processes to preserve and spread those messages. I cannot conceive of sending a message to my sister in Arizona on the sycamore leaf from my backyard faintly inscribed with charcoal from an old apple tree stump. Chances of it arriving in one piece would be slim. However, with today’s technology, I can email her or engage in instant messaging. Technology has made communication easier and quicker, but to this I must add one more question – has it made it better? When we are limited and each word becomes a painstaking choice, perhaps the weight of the message becomes greater, clearer, more profound than when we have the ability to run on and on chasing a flashing cursor across a clean white page.

Hamburger and Perfect Party Food Essay

I hate when my stomach feels so empty. The growling and tightening of my insides drives me insane. The only thing on my mind at the time is food. Anything else doesn’t matter. My three favorite foods are chicken, burgers, and last pizza. You can’t go wrong with chicken. It goes with many sides such as corn, potatoes, or fries. Fried chicken is the best because it makes the skin so crisp and crunchy. If I had to choose out of my top three foods chicken would most likely be number one. Second choice that I have named is burgers. The best hamburgers are the ones that come straight off of the bar -b- que pit. Usually for summer we always have burgers because they are the easiest things to make and they also go well with birthdays or holidays. The lettuce, ketchup, mustard, tomatoes, etc. all make the hamburger so delicious. Last we have pizza. My favorite type of pizza is pepperoni because it is so good. If I have to choose any other toppings I would choose meat lovers because it’s all different types of meat on one pizza. They seem to be the perfect party food because I usually order them when I don’t feel like leaving the house or when my friends and I are having a small get together. What would we do without food? Having a nice full stomach makes you happy and it also gives you energy. Food will always be something that I will cherish in life, especially my favorite three that I mentioned earlier in my essay. Food is a very important thing and I have lots of other favorites.

The American Civil War, was a civil war fought from 1861 to 1865 to determine the survival of the Union or independence for the Confederacy. Among the 34 states in January 1861, seven Southern slave states individually declared their secession from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. The Confederacy, simply called the South, grew to include eleven states. Although they claimed thirteen states and additional western territories, the Confederacy was never recognized by any foreign country. The states that remained loyal and did not declare secession were known as the Union or the North. The war had its origin in the fractious issue of slavery, the extension of slavery into the western territories. Credit can often be earned for volunteer service, community service, or travel. * External Degree/Nontraditional Program: If one needs even more flexibility in their schedule, accredited nontraditional or external degree programs that require little or no class attendance could be the option. Students receive workbooks, textbooks, videos, and television programs, and/or communicate through the mail or electronically. The newest twist is learning via the Internet. The choice of degree programs expands, since location is not an issue, and one can log on at his     convenience. Research in this area identifies four major barriers to education for working adults: Lack of time, family responsibilities, scheduling and location of courses, and the cost of education. Also societal transformational forces, including increased competition, changing needs and expectations of society, and the drive for performance and accountability, add even further pressure to the already strenuous adult work force. Accelerated Degree Program Out of all available options, Accelerated degree programs have become a major innovation in serving adult undergraduate learners. Created to meet adult learner needs for convenience, access, and relevancy, these accelerated degree offerings typically represent professional areas of applied study, specialized curricular formats, cohort learning models, and compressed time schedule of one course offering during a 4-6 week period What is â€Å"Accelerated Learning†? The Accelerated Degree Program is a non-traditional program serving adults age 25 and older who have already completed certain formal education. In an ERIC Digest review of accelerated learning (AL) (Imel, 2002) there are two distinct definitions of accelerated learning used in conjunction with adult education. The first is associated with higher education, and the need for adults to participate in non-traditional models to compensate for the demands of family, work and life that do not impact the more traditional college student. The second form is a type of learning, regularly promoted in the world of corporate training. This paper mainly concerns with the first form. The following are six factors which, together, seem to have pushed the need for lifelong learning into the limelight recently: Continuing shift to an information society Competing influences of specialization Increasing internationalization Explosion of knowledge and technology Microeconomic reform and the changing workplace Emergence of new occupations and careers Advantages of Accelerated degree programs The benefits of Accelerated degree programs are undeniable. Students can take classes at their convenience, allowing them to keep up with their regular jobs or family responsibilities. They can pursue degrees in a variety of fields, even if they live far from a traditional brick-and-mortar campus. There are even online resources such as cyber-libraries that provide online students with all the tools they need to succeed. And advances in technology have made it easy for students to take part in interactive, multimedia lessons and live chats that simulate the classroom experience.
